METHOD & LIMITS

What the pollsters asked.

01

Job approval

Opinium asks whether respondents approve or disapprove of how each leader is handling their job. The trend chart shows approve minus disapprove.

02

Favourability

YouGov asks whether respondents have a favourable or unfavourable opinion. The wider snapshot shows favourable minus unfavourable.

03

Do not merge them

Question wording, samples, dates and pollster methods differ. The two sections are not averaged together, and neither measures voting intention.

04

Read the tables

Every snapshot links to the publisher and the raw tables. Figures are rounded and remain subject to ordinary polling uncertainty.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

UK leader polling FAQ

What is a UK political leader approval rating?

It records answers to a pollster’s question about whether people approve or disapprove of how a named leader is doing their job. Net approval subtracts disapproval from approval.

Is leader approval the same as voting intention?

No. Voting-intention polling asks which party people would support. A person can approve of a leader without supporting that leader’s party, or do the reverse.

What is the difference between approval and favourability?

Approval assesses job performance; favourability asks for an overall positive or negative opinion. They are related but not interchangeable, so this page presents them in separate sections.

Does Road to 326 rank UK politicians?

No. People are listed alphabetically. The page reproduces named pollsters’ published responses and links to their methods; it does not provide an editorial ranking or endorsement.

How will this page be updated?

The Opinium series should be extended when comparable leader job-approval results are published. Wider-politician snapshots should retain their original fieldwork date and pollster rather than being mixed into the trend.
